For alto saxophone and bassoon

Duration: 6′

Program Note

Alternation is an atmospheric contemporary duet for alto saxophone and bassoon. The piece is based off of aspects of music that can alternate back and forth (such as dynamics, articulation styles, musical moods, and elements of form). At the beginning of the piece, the concept of alternating musical elements is quite apparent in trills and changing dynamics, gradually becoming more complicated as increasingly ambiguous representations of alternations are experimented with, such as having several melodic ideas, previously stated in clear succession, flip back and forth as the piece develops. The saxophone and bassoon communicate many thoughts to each other as this piece explores the concept and meaning of the word “alternation.”
